Happy 2nd Birthday, Sydney!

Sydney is TWO!  This probably sounds odd, but this year's birthday has been more emotional for me than her first.  When she turned one, she was still a baby to me, especially because she wasn't walking yet or even crawling.  Now she is a little girl; a sweet, talkative, kind-hearted little girl whom I love more everyday.

We started off her birthday with a stop at Brugger's for a bagel and then headed to the zoo, a tradition we started last year.  Like last year, the zoo was not crowded and we were able to see all the animals fairly close up.  Sydney definitely enjoyed it more this year than last, but her favorite was a temporary exhibit that wasn't there last time....anamatronic dinosaurs!  She was a little apprehensive about them moving and making sounds, but quickly got over it and kept saying "wanna see more dinosaurs!".

The celebration continued with a pizza dinner with MeMe and Pops, opening presents, and eating cake (a dinosaur cake at that!).  Some of her favorite gifts were a wagon from MeMe and Pops, a playhouse, and a magnetic ocean creature puzzle.

We also celebrated with family and friends at Pullen Park.  The weather could not have been more perfect, although the park was definitely busy because of it.  Sydney had a great time celebrating with friends and family...topped off with a ride on the train!

Here are a few things I want to remember about Sydney at 2 years old:
*She continues to amaze me with her language.  She speaks in sentences and uses words like reflection and pterodactyl correctly.
*She has finally learned how to jump...after much work on her part!
*She loves to read, I mean l.o.v.e.s.  Some of her current favorite books are any Little Critter books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Noah's Ark, and a Lion King book.
*She is smitten with dinosaurs.  She has been saying for the past few weeks that she wants to be a "green T-rex with Bronty (brontosaurs) on the back" for Halloween.  (I'm not sure what the Bronty on the back means...)
*Her go-to name is "Freddy".  If she gets a new stuffed animal, she asks "What we gonna name him?" and then immediately answers herself with "Freddy".  Also, if I don't know the name of something she says "it's Freddy".  For example, we were playing with some Disney Princess stickers.  I know the names of some of them like Cinderella and Belle, but I'm not familiar with some of the newer princesses.  I was telling her the names of the ones I knew and when we got to one I didn't know, I told her so and she responded with "that's Freddy".

18 Months Old!

Happy 18 month birthday, Sydney!  I am in awe daily of how much she grows, changes, explores, and learns.  I can't wait to see what the next six months hold, until she is TWO!

Here are a few fun things about Sydney right now:
  • She says "thank you, Daddy" or "thank you Mama" when we give her something.
  • She seems to be scared of bugs and even thinks little pieces of lint or dirt are bugs sometimes.
  • If I start to sing a song that she doesn't want to hear, she says "turn off" (haha!).
  • Her hair is finally long enough to put in a ponytail on top of her head.  Ok, so it looks like Pebbles, but I think it is super cute.
  • She has started to sing and her first song is Ring Around the Rosie.  Take a look at the video at the bottom of this post.
  • She has become interested in coloring lately...interesting thing is she favors her left hand!  I'm not sure it will stay that way, but I wasn't expecting it.

Sydney- version 1.04

Here are a few things I want to remember about Sydney at this age (1 year, 16 months):
1. She LOVES a bath.
2. She demands having her hair dried after her bath (she says "hair drier" over and over).
3. She does not like getting her hands dirty.
4. She says "lob-lubs" for lobsters, "crim" for crib, and "bim" for bib.
5. She says "more some" when she wants some more of something.
6. She is walking more than crawling (YIPEE!!).
7. She eats most anything you put in front of her.
8. She uses phrases like "get it", "hold it", "touch it" often (I lovingly tell her she's a bit bossy).
9. She knows how to open the baby gates if they aren't latched completely.  If Sophie is on the outside of the gate, she opens it, says "come on, Sophie" then closes it back once Sophie is on the inside.
10. Her favorite song is "Happy Birthday".  We sing it about a million times a day and it is always to someone different and she often changes her mind about whom to sing it to half way through.  Her favorites are to sing it to Big E's (her Uncle Brent's dog), Daddy, even her books.  She also requests the "How old are you" verse sometimes.

I feel like she changes so much and I don't want to forget some of these things that I adore about her right now!

And we have a crawler!

~Be strong in the Lord with his energy and strength. (Ephesians6:10)~

As it seems with many things in our life, Sydney's crawling has been quite the adventure.  I know it seems late for me to say she is a crawler, and that's because it is.  When we went for Sydney's 12 month well check, one of my main questions/concerns for the pediatrician was should we be worried that Sydney was not crawling?  The short answer was yes.  Now the why is more complicated, but long story short, the cause of the late crawling is a combination of her not being able to use her hands/arms for a month following surgery as well as the fact that she is on the small side which can sometimes cause a delay.  Her pediatrician referred her for an evaluation to determine if she qualified for physical therapy.

Well, this referral turned into a much bigger deal than I anticipated.  We were assigned a service coordinator who came for a home visit.  The service coordinator then scheduled an evaluation time.  The evaluation consisted of the three of us, plus the service coordinator, a social worker, and a physical therapist...overwhelming to say the least.  It was hard enough knowing that Sydney is delayed physically, add on top of that the stress of having three strangers come to the house and expect her to "perform", well it gave me a few gray hairs I'm sure.

On the day of the evaluation, we were told Sydney would be tested in five areas: gross motor skills, fine motor skills, expressive language (how she communicates), receptive language (how she receives and understands language), and problem solving skills (really...on a 13 month old??).  My main area of concern of course was the lack of crawling as well as the fact she was unable to get herself from a laying down position to a sitting position and vice versa.  I was also interested to see how she would perform in the fine motor category, especially since I'm not sure what a 13 month old is supposed to be able to do fine motor wise and to see if her syndactyly has hindered her in this area at all.  Well, they of course evaluated those areas last.  I suppose this is because they wanted her at her "peak" for the more academic skills.  The evaluation lasted about an hour or so.  I must say she sat down in front of the three strangers and performed to her little heart's content.  It was as if she were putting on a show for them.  She spoke about every word she knew and imitated just about every animal sound she knew as well.  She was even able to do a few things I didn't know she could.  For example, one of the evaluators asked her to "give Mommy the _____."  The tricky part was I couldn't hold out my hand as a clue that she was to give it to me.  She turned right around and handed me the object.  There were also some tasks she was not able to complete, such as a simple puzzle, but this did not really surprise me.  They warned us before beginning the assessment that they would be asking her to do some tasks she would not be able to complete but not to worry.  They had to follow the complete test and some tasks are above her developmental stage (ie puzzles).

After finishing the evaluation, Sydney went down for a nap and we discussed the results.  They basically compared Sydney with other 13 month olds and graded (for lack of a better term) her on a bell curve.  They divided the bell curve into the following categories: above average, average, slightly delayed, and significantly delayed.  When going over the results, the evaluators started with Sydney's strengths.  She tested above average in both expressive and receptive language (insert proud mama comments here) and average in both problem solving and fine motor.  Unfortunately she tested significantly delayed in gross motor.  Now, in the moment I was ok with this result.  I have discovered since having Sydney that I am the type of person who goes with the flow in the moment and has to process things after the fact.  So while discussing the results, I held myself together.  Following the evaluation, I found myself feeling sad, frustrated, and guilty (why I'm not sure, comes with motherhood territory I guess).  I think every mother's hope is that her child is normal developmentally and it's hard when that doesn't happen.  Believe me, I know this is not a huge ordeal in the long-run, but right now it's hard to see my baby struggle.  So the results mean that Sydney qualifies for physical therapy.

Fast forward about a month and a half and....we have a CRAWLER!!!  Sydney has had four physical therapy sessions and she make leaps and bounds worth of progress each time.  Her therapist comes to the house and basically plays with her for an hour but manipulates the play into opportunities for her to practice crawling, pulling up, sitting down, and even walking behind a rolling toy.  She is great about leaving us with assignments to work on throughout the week until her next session.  Each time I can see improvement.  In fact, yesterday she crawled up the STAIRS.  I mean, to go from not crawling (actually, she did an odd crawl when she basically pushed herself with her legs using her arms a little bit but kept her head on the floor...it was a bit awkward) to being pretty much fully mobile in four weeks is pretty darn amazing.

The therapist guessed Sydney would be crawling 'normally' by Thanksgiving, but Sydney has blown that prediction out of the water.  I can already see Sydney being a determined child, not letting anyone tell her she can't.  Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised to be writing another post soon saying she is walking! Until then, here is a link to a video of our crawler from a few weeks ago.  She is much quicker now!

First Haircut

A couple of weeks ago Sydney had her first haircut.  Now, she didn't have to have one by any means, but it was nice to even things up a little bit.  Sydney did great, didn't fuss or act scared at all.  We fed her Cheerios to try and keep her as distracted as much as possible.  She was wiggly, but Julie, the girl who did the haircutting, was wonderful...she went right along with the wiggling!

Funny face! :)

So, I'm not sure why, but we didn't get a finished product picture right after the haircut.  But here are a few shots from a few days later.  Not a largely obvious difference, but it's nice to be rid of some of the scraggly pieces!

Happy Birthday, Sydney Claire!

How quickly does time fly?  I don't think I understood just how fast until Sydney was born.  In the blink of an eye we have gone from:

to this:

Sydney truly is the light of our lives.  It has been a crazy first year for her: a stint in the Special Care Nursery to begin her life and a five hour hand surgery on both hands at seven months old.  She has been through more than a lot of babies, but has ultimately been blessed beyond measure.  Her smiles melt our hearts and her budding personality makes us love her even more than we thought possible.  We can't wait to see what this next year brings!

To celebrate, we took her to the zoo on her actual birthday.  She is incredibly interested in animals, so we figured we would give the zoo a try.  She loves books with photos of animals and even knows several animal sounds.  We didn't have high expectations for the day, just figured we would enjoy the zoo as much as possible.

We started the day off with a (free!) biscuit at Chick-fil-a, which also happened to be Sydney's first biscuit.  Needless to say, that girl can EAT!  She loved the biscuit. :)

Yummy!

When we arrived at the Asheboro Zoo, Blake and I felt like we were having a Griswold Wally World moment...the parking lot was virtually empty...and we got there well after opening time.  Lucky for us, the beginning of September is just a quiet time at the zoo.  In fact, we were the only people in the ticket line and we didn't see anyone else for the first several exhibits.  Plus, since the weather was nice and it was quiet most of the animals were close up for us to see.

Sydney enjoyed looking at the animals- lots of pointing and babbling.  She also enjoyed riding in the stroller, which was helpful.  Her favorites appeared to be the zebras, elephants, and birds.  We even got a "quack quack" out of her when she saw a duck.  Overall we had a great time!  I think this may become an annual trip.

Notice our car is the only one you can see!

Swimming!

Sydney got two inflatable pools for Easter from her two sets of grandparents...they all knew exactly what Sydney needed! :)  We tried Sydney in the pool a few weekends ago and she wasn't really having it.  I think she was a bit overwhelmed; she had only had her casts off a few days and hadn't been in water in over a month, so I think she just needed to be reintroduced to water.  Anyway, the first attempt was short lived, but I enjoyed just getting to put her in a bathing suit!

Cute bathing suit!

"Look, it's my hands!!!!"

"I don't think I like this very much."

"My paci is helping a little bit."

We retried the pool yesterday evening.  It has been so hot outside and there doesn't seem to be relief in sight so I feel like relaxing in the pool will be great for Sydney.  I suppose all she needed was time because she sat right down and splashed away.  She wasn't even interested in any toys, she really just wanted to interact with the water.  I think we may have a water baby on our hands after all!  This weekend we are taking Sydney to the beach for the first time and I can't wait!  Hopefully she will find as much enjoyment by the sea as her dad and I do.

Splash!

What???

"Excuse me, enough with the pictures, I'm playing here."

So sweet!
